Disclaimer: Apple is ultimately responsible for anything involving iTunes including backing up and restore app data. This document is provided solely as a convience for our customers who would like to see a step by step demo of how to restore tasting notes data using the iTunes backup. For the official Apple documentation regarding this issue see this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766.
In the event that something goes wrong with your iPhone or updating an app and you find that your tasting notes data has been wiped out, iTunes can help. iTunes keeps a backup of all your app data and you can restore this backup to your iPhone or a new iPhone at any time.
Each time you plug in your iPhone and your app data has changed iTunes automatically makes a backup. You can verify this backup by going into iTunes and from the main menu selecting “iTunes” and then “Preferences”. A small window pops up. Click on the “Devices” tab and you will get a screen that looks something like this:

As you can see I have three backups for two different iPhones here. It is a good idea to make sure that you have backups like this for your iPhone/iPod as well.
In the event that something goes horribly wrong with your device or a software update you can use this to get help. Essentially, iTunes can restore your device, sync back all your music and apps and finally restore any app specific data that is in your backup.
Here is the procedure for restoring your data:
- Plug in your device into your computer
- Start up iTunes if it has not automatically started up
- Select your device in iTunes
- Click the “restore” button

- Very Important: Choose “don’t back up”

NOTE: if you choose the “Back Up” option at this point iTunes will backup the state that your device is currently in. So, if you tasting notes data is lost and you backup at this point the backup will write over your preserved data (essentially backing up the damaged device state). So, if you choose to back up right now when your restore you will not get your data back. Make sure to pick “Don’t Back Up” so you get the data that was preserved before the problem.
- A message box appears that asking if you are sure that you want to restore your iPhone. Pick “restore”.
- This part takes a while. iTunes will be extracting the software, preparing the iPhone and then restoring it to factory condition but with the latest software.
- A message box pops up and some point telling you that your device has been restored to factory conditions and is restarting
- Once the phone has rebooted a screen pops up that says “Set up Your Phone”. This is where you restore the backup
- Choose “Restore from the backup of:” and then select “Continue”
- Another message box will appear to inform you that your phone is being restore and is restarting
- Once that happens you should have all of your original data back in your app.
